I've installed and activated the ARI Fancy Lightbox free plugin to test this out before purchasing the paid version. I only need it to open external link in the lightbox. So I have only have the Open external links into lightbox option checked. When I click an external link button on my site, it opens in a lightbox, but the lightbox is blank. I'm not sure what I did wrong.

The page can be loaded into the lightbox according to CORS rules which is configured on remote site. It allows to load page into <IFRAME> (lightbox) only on the same site and blocks loading from another URLs.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Does that mean the lightbox won't load an external website or that I have to publish the site to my live site (not the development site) to see it work?

The plugin can load external sites into the lightbox if it is allowed by external site. These security settings are configured on external site server and it is not possible to change it on another site.
