Hello,

At first register a DB connection on "ARI Smart Content -> Data -> Database data -> DB connections" page. DB connection doesn't require to specify table(s). Only DB host, name, user and password. It can be used by different queries to the same DB then open "ARI Smart Content -> Data -> Database data -> SQL queries" page and create SELECT SQL quer(ies) which will be used to retrieve data from table(s). This query can be used by "ARI Smart Content - DataTable" add-on to show data. You can watch this video, it demonstrates how to use "ARI Smart Content - DataTable" to show data from a database.

Try to enable "Debug" parameter in connection settings. If it doesn't help to identify the reason of the problem, could you provide a link to a page where the problem occurs and a temporary access to your J! backend by email so we can investigate it in more details?
