That change made the drop downs perfect, however, it also created havoc with the rest of the page elements and completely screwed the layout.

Don't know where that last post went.
These rules made the sub-menus appear perfectly but created havoc with the page layout and order.

We can't reproduce this issue with our latest solution. If you provide temporary access to your Joomla! backend by email, we can investigate this issue more deeply and try to provide solution.
